The Malaysian Society of Hypertension (MSH) successfully participated in the SEASALT Workshop 2024: Southeast Asia Salt Action Leadership Teamwork, held virtually on October 21st, 2024. The workshop marked a significant milestone in regional collaboration for salt reduction strategies, bringing together experts and stakeholders from across Southeast Asia.

MSH Council Members played key roles in this important initiative, with Professor Datin Dr. Chia Yook Chin serving as Workshop Advisor and Dr. Beh Hooi Chin as the Organizing Chair. The event, organized in collaboration with the Malaysian Society for World Action on Salt, Sugar and Health (MyWASSH), attracted participants from various Southeast Asian countries including Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, and Brunei.

The day-long workshop successfully achieved its primary objective of developing recommendations for a model policy to support Southeast Asian countries in reducing salt consumption and overall blood pressure levels. Key highlights included:

Distinguished members of our delegation delivered key presentations during the international sessions, highlighting crucial aspects of hypertension management in Asia:

Professor Datin Chia Yook Chin from Sunway University presented an insightful lecture on "Salt Reduction in Asia: Current Strategies, Barriers and Opportunities." Her presentation was part of the MyWASSH and MySALT (Malaysian Salt Action and Leadership Teamwork) initiative, which revealed significant findings about out-of-home food consumption patterns, with 79% of the population eating out regularly. The research incorporated comprehensive viewpoints from various stakeholders, including food vendors and manufacturers, leading to evidence-based recommendations for implementation.

Professor Dr. Siew Mooi Ching from Universiti Putra Malaysia shared valuable research findings on "Factors Associated with Poor Sleep Quality Among Patients with Hypertension in a Primary Care Clinic - A Cross-sectional Study," contributing to our understanding of sleep's role in hypertension management.

The participation at CHM 2024 aligns with MSH's commitment to international collaboration in hypertension research and management. The conference, hosted in Kunming, China, from November 28 to December 1, 2024, brings together leading experts in the field of hypertension and provides a platform for sharing groundbreaking research and clinical practices.

Our delegation's participation also strengthens the regional cooperation between Malaysia and China in addressing hypertension challenges. This collaboration is particularly significant as both countries work towards improving cardiovascular health outcomes in their respective populations.
