Calling All Young Artists: Join the Children's Art Program 2026

The Malaysian Society of Hypertension (MSH) is pleased to share information about the Clinical Nutrition Congress ICNC 2026, hosted by IAPEN India (Indian Association for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition), Nagpur Chapter. This premier regional conference presents an excellent opportunity for healthcare professionals interested in the intersection of nutrition and chronic disease management, including hypertension.

MSH Invites Members to ICNC 2026: Clinical Nutrition Congress in Nagpur

The Malaysian Society of Hypertension (MSH) held its Annual General Meeting on Thursday, 23rd January 2026. The meeting saw active participation from society members and marked an important milestone with the election of the new MSH Council for the upcoming term.                                           

The AGM concluded with the announcement of the newly elected office bearers and council members who will lead the society's initiatives in advancing hypertension management across Malaysia.                                      

The newly elected council expressed their commitment to furthering the society's mission in promoting awareness, education, and research in hypertension management. MSH extends its gratitude to all members for their continued support and participation in shaping the future direction of the society.

Uniting Healthcare Organisations for Community Wellness

The Walk With A Doc Petaling Jaya event, held on 13 July 2025, exemplified the value of collaborative healthcare initiatives. This community engagement programme brought together multiple organisations including the Department of Primary Care Medicine UMMC, Health Outreach Programme and Education (HOPE@PPUM), Malaysian Society of Hypertension (MSH), and Malaysian Society for World Action on Salt, Sugar and Health (MyWASSH) to create a cardiovascular health awareness event.

Holistic Approach to Community Health Education

The event combined physical activity with health screening and education, creating a multi-faceted approach to cardiovascular wellness. Led by Associate Professor Dr Fadzilah Hanum, the "Walk With A Doc" session encouraged community members to engage in physical activity whilst learning about its benefits for cardiovascular health. This approach demonstrated that health education can be interactive and enjoyable rather than purely didactic.

Due to community response, health screenings were conducted prior to the walking session. These covered blood pressure monitoring with standardised techniques, blood glucose testing for diabetes screening, cholesterol level assessment for cardiovascular risk evaluation, haemoglobin measurement for anaemia detection, and cardiovascular risk assessment using WHO protocols.

The event featured specialist presentations on hypertension topics. Dr Chong Karleen presented "How to Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately at Home," providing practical guidance on self-monitoring techniques and emphasising the importance of proper equipment use and measurement timing for reliable home readings. Dr Choong Jin Ian delivered "How Does Exercise Affect Your Blood Pressure?" explaining the physiological relationship between physical activity and blood pressure control, motivating participants to incorporate regular exercise into their daily routines.

The partnership between multiple healthcare organisations created synergistic benefits. The Malaysian Society of Hypertension brought specialist expertise in blood pressure management and provided evidence-based guidelines for screening and education protocols. The Malaysian Society for World Action on Salt, Sugar and Health contributed insights on dietary modification, particularly emphasising the campaign theme "A Pinch a Day Keeps Disease Away." The Health Outreach Programme and Education component ensured community engagement and health promotion strategies.

The event's success was evident in the participation of the Petaling Jaya community, particularly amongst senior citizens who recognised the value of accessible healthcare services. The response demonstrated the significant unmet need for community-based cardiovascular health programmes.

Beyond the immediate event activities, the collaboration extended to digital health promotion through podcast development. Partnership with the Family Medicine Specialist Association (FMSA) resulted in a podcast series focusing on hypertension awareness. The podcast content addressed common myths and misconceptions about high blood pressure, evidence-based management strategies for patients and families, lifestyle modification techniques for blood pressure control, and treatment adherence and monitoring recommendations.

The event also utilised visual education materials, including the cardiovascular risk assessment traffic light system, making complex medical information accessible to diverse community audiences.

The success of this collaborative initiative demonstrates the effectiveness of multi-organisational partnerships in addressing community health needs. By combining expertise from different healthcare sectors, the event created an approach to hypertension awareness that extends beyond traditional clinical settings.

This model of community engagement provides a framework for future cardiovascular health initiatives, showing how professional organisations can work together to create meaningful, accessible, and effective health promotion programmes that serve community needs whilst advancing public health objectives. The WWAD partnership represents an example of how healthcare organisations can pool resources and expertise to create impactful community health initiatives that promote both awareness and behavioural change in cardiovascular disease prevention.

The series also presented evidence-based management strategies that patients and their families can implement, making complex medical concepts understandable for lay audiences.

The series addressed lifestyle modification techniques for blood pressure control, providing practical guidance that listeners can immediately apply to their daily routines. Treatment adherence and monitoring recommendations were also thoroughly discussed, helping patients understand the importance of consistent medication use and regular health monitoring.

The integration of medical and nursing students into community screening campaigns represents an important component of healthcare education, combining academic knowledge with practical patient care experience. UMMC's approach to student training during screening campaigns exemplifies good practices in clinical education.

Before participating in community screening activities, students underwent structured educational sessions designed to ensure both clinical safety and measurement accuracy. The training programme covered blood pressure measurement using standardised protocols, blood glucose monitoring with proper safety procedures, and cholesterol testing following laboratory standards. Students also learnt anthropometric measurements for BMI and body composition analysis, along with cardiovascular risk assessment using validated tools.

An important component of the training focused on clinical safety protocols. This encompassed proper handling of sharps to prevent needlestick injuries, infection control measures following universal precautions, and equipment sterilisation and maintenance procedures. Students also learnt emergency response protocols for adverse reactions and the importance of patient confidentiality and data protection measures.

Student participation was carefully supervised by experienced medical professionals, including Dr Amirul Amzar and Dr Beh Hooi Chin, who provided real-time guidance and feedback. This mentorship model ensured quality control in all measurements and assessments whilst maintaining patient safety through continuous supervision. Students benefited from immediate learning opportunities through feedback and developed professional communication skills through patient interaction. The supervision also ensured ethical practice in healthcare delivery.

The hands-on experience provided students with valuable learning opportunities in technical competency development. Students gained proficiency in essential clinical skills whilst working with diverse community populations, enhancing their ability to adapt communication styles for different age groups and cultural backgrounds. Community screening participation helped students develop important professional attitudes including empathy and compassion through direct patient interaction. They developed cultural sensitivity when working with diverse populations and strengthened teamwork skills through collaborative healthcare delivery. The experience also fostered public health awareness and understanding of community health needs whilst instilling professional responsibility in representing their institutions.

This training model effectively bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Students experience firsthand the challenges and rewards of community-based healthcare delivery, preparing them for future roles as healthcare professionals who understand the importance of preventive care and community engagement.

The programme's success demonstrates how educational institutions can leverage community health initiatives to enhance student learning whilst simultaneously serving public health needs. This approach strengthens both healthcare education and community wellness programmes.

Building Future Healthcare Leaders - Training Medical and Nursing Students for Community Screening

Promoting Cardiovascular Health Through Accessible Community Screening

The Department of Primary Care Medicine at University Malaya Medical Centre conducted a blood pressure screening campaign during May Measurement Month 2025, demonstrating the value of community-focused healthcare initiatives in promoting cardiovascular wellness.

This four-day campaign at UMMC offered a holistic approach to cardiovascular health screening. Participants received blood pressure monitoring using standardised measurement protocols alongside Body Mass Index calculations for weight management assessment. The programme also included Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis to evaluate body composition, measuring visceral fat levels, subcutaneous fat, total body fat, and body age. Blood glucose and cholesterol testing provided metabolic screening, whilst counselling and education sessions offered guidance for lifestyle modifications.

One of the campaign's features was the "BP Tree" - a visual representation of blood pressure control status amongst participants. Each leaf on the tree was colour-coded to reflect individual BP readings. Red leaves indicated uncontrolled hypertension requiring immediate attention, whilst yellow leaves represented borderline readings between 140-159/90-99 mmHg needing monitoring. Green leaves showed well-controlled blood pressure levels.

This approach made complex medical data accessible and meaningful to participants, helping them understand their cardiovascular risk status at a glance.

The campaign incorporated WHO cardiovascular risk assessment charts to provide participants with personalised risk evaluations. Using a traffic light system for easy comprehension, the red zone signified high cardiovascular risk requiring immediate intervention, the yellow zone indicated moderate risk needing lifestyle modifications, and the green zone reflected low risk with maintenance recommendations.

This visual communication proved effective in motivating high-risk participants to take their conditions seriously and commit to treatment compliance.

The 2025 campaign adopted the theme "A Pinch a Day Keeps Disease Away," emphasising the role of salt reduction in blood pressure management. This message resonated with participants, making dietary modification advice more memorable and actionable.

The campaign's success demonstrates how community-based screening programmes can effectively bridge healthcare gaps whilst promoting early detection and prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

The training emphasised that even small deviations from standard protocols can lead to misdiagnosis or inappropriate treatment decisions.

The CME programme extended beyond basic measurement techniques to encompass device calibration and maintenance for ensuring equipment accuracy and reliability. Participants also learnt about patient preparation protocols to standardise pre-measurement procedures, along with documentation standards for maintaining consistent record-keeping practices. Quality assurance measures were implemented to create checks and balances for accuracy, whilst interpretation guidelines helped staff understand readings within proper clinical context.

Professional Development and Patient Safety

This model of professional development reflects UMMC's commitment to enhancing both clinical competency and patient safety.
